The states is better than the UK, its a good advice be4 u start the UK dream, anyway the new plab is really difficult, but the main book is the first aid which will give u about 115 questions, while u need about 126 to pass, now where to get those extra marks from!?! it depends on u, u can try the yellow oxford, or the fish test, or there is a new oxford book called the foundation programm (as i think), or if u r a fresh graduate just revise the sixth year quickly, and good luck, still try the states its better 4 u

It's called "Oxford Handbook for The Foundation Programme" It's basically all the knowledge that a post graduat student needs to start practicing in a hospital, i guess that it's very good 4 the PLAB test, still a friendly advice, go for the states where u have a definite chance, besides that the american board is worth the effort, good luck and may god be with u

I heard some people talking this year that there are increased number of application to the american programs and part of it is the fact that UK is not taking much of IMG. So what Dr. Ayad saying may be true

If it became difficult to get a job in the UK, I don't think that it is a piece of cake in the States! I wonder whether the tens of students preparing for their STEP1 would agree!Regardless of the fact that it is still the first STEP, US experience, STEP2, CS and the VISA difficulties are still waiting! Even after getting a job, in the States doctors are still trapped due to the worries about renewing their visas

In the UK there is a new law that gives the prioraty 2 the europeans, which means that u cant get a job unless there is no european wants it, and by european i mean all the eastern europeans including Romania, besides that, no one have passed the new plab from the first try, as i know, anyway u can always try and its allah's will after all, check www.gmc-uk.org

Thanks Dr.Burhan for this information. I am aware of the new unfair legistlations in the UK and as you said if your application would only be considered after EU applicants= very difficult if not impossible. Still hundreds of overseas find their way into the NHS systme via the foundation 2. The situation is still messy even for UK applicants and new legistlations are expected in Aug 2007!

Nobody says specialzation is easy anywhere. Nobody should expect that life and post-grad traning is "piece of cake". Everyone should expect and be prepared for the worst, yet hope for the best.
So our question here is "what is the best". In reality there is no one answer. No one can claim that one rose will always smell better or one food will always have best nutritions. God created us different and so our decisions will be.
However if you look at some variables like: the structure of training, the income generated, job opportunity (whether in the country of training or in the Arab world) you will undoubtly find US have the advantage. I don't claim to know everything happened in the last 10 years since I graduated and intered training but I can tell you from the reality of my current work, north American grads have better chances for work.
Anyhow there are many other variables and the decision is yours to make AFTER you prioratize your goals and interests.
Good luck for all of you

I am sad for the hardship our graduates are facing currently in getting post graduate training in the states. It is not only that we have hard time finding a good opportunities in our own countires, but we currently have hard time finding such opportunities in USA that at some point in the past opened its arms to receive us as physicians and welcome us to feel the real meaning of respected physician.

I am sad because of 2 main reasons. One of which could be fixed but the other is very hard to be fixed.

The first one that could be managed is the bad english communication few of our graduate have when they come here.

This affects their chances of getting good position and if they did, it affects their chances to do well during their specialty. It also decrease the odds that the program directors will consider syrians for their next interview seasons. However, on the other hands we have talented people who work hard on their language and showed the shinning face in both language and education to the amrican. Those are our reserve and hope to keep the syrian physicans in good shape and to encourage the amrican to hire syrian in their training programs.

I will try also my best to have a syrian medical student rounding with me almost on monthly basis when I get to this point in about a year and few months. This should be very helpful for everyone who is considering post grad training in usa.

The second hardship that is difficult to correct is the visa issue.

It is getting worse and worse, not only because of denial of granting the visa, but sometimes to equivalent level becuase of the delay in granting the visa. As example, if I am a program direcotr and I gave a position to a syrian medical graduate whose visa was refused or delayed 2 or 3 months after the starting of the residency program academic year, then I won't give the syrian interviews next year and would prefer other nationalities that have less chance to have their visa denied or delayed

The delay part has got bad in the last 3 years and I hope for people who are powerful to be able to solve this problem at least for humanistic reasons

www.aippg.net
with the first aid and general info ....u ll pass God welling
however ,plab 1 is becoming harder and harder and it is ordinary now to fail_God forbedin_

oppertunities in the UK are really craped, but still there is some hope...europains need 7 in IELTS now if they
havent studied medicne in English

it is beyond qestion that the USA is the best ....but in pedaitrics abd neurology....branches we can specialise in

but u have to bear in mind that uk is not offering surgery 4 everyone!
u could say it is semiimposible
