Miller Fisher syndrome

Miller Fisher syndrome(MFS) is a rare, acquired nerve disease that is considered to be a variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome(GBS). It is characterized by abnormal muscle coordination, paralysis of the eye muscles, and absence of the tendon reflexes. Like Guillain-Barré syndrome, symptoms may be preceded by a viral illness(like EBV). Additional symptoms include generalized muscle weakness and respiratory failure. The majority of individuals with Miller Fisher syndrome have a unique antibody that characterizes the disorder.

Now who will tell us what is the big difference(clinically) between Miller Fisher syndrome and GBS???

The difference between MFS and GBS is that different nerve groups are affected such that paralysis in GBS tends to start in the legs and move up, where in MFS it starts in the head, affecting eye muscles, balance and slowly descends to the neck arms etc. MFS does not generally have the life threatening aspects of GBS but can be very difficult to live through with double vision, nausea, weakness, difficulty walking, light sensitivity and pain which can go on for months.
