Left, A section of skin from a patient with systemic sclerosis shows coarse bundles of collagen in the lower portion lying parallel to the surface. Atrophy of the epidermis and loss of accessory skin structures can occur, although not well demonstrated here. The dermis is thickened. The histologic changes are the same as in the localized form of scleroderma (morphea).
