A species found in the human mouth, throat, and nasopharynx; ordinarily, it is not considered to be pathogenic, but this organism may be recovered from ulcerated teeth and sinuses and from blood and heart lesions in cases of subacute endocarditis.

although it's not usually pathogen. today (in sham pediatrics hosp.), i've seen a case of Peritonitis with Strep. Mitis + enteroccoci in a child with Nephrotic syndrome & HCV infection. this child was on Interferon for HCV & steroids to control his Nephrosis, & maybe that accounts for his SBP with this unusual organism...
